Supportive services and special residences for developmentally disabled adults are limited. As longevity increases in our society, the needs of a growing population of developmentally disabled adults far exceed the resources available.
In Florida in 2007, 12,000 developmentally disabled adults are waiting for Medicaid waiver services, 2,000 of them are in central Florida. Untold others search for services but are not on the waiting list. Of those on the list, almost half live with caregivers over age 65.
Parents confront this dearth of services as they consider the future for their disabled children. They try to find jobs and job coaches. They look for ways to establish social and recreational opportunities. They search for special residences that will allow their children to live as independently as possible in a secure and fulfilling environment.
Governmental agencies and local organizations provide many of the services available, but access to services is limited and coordinating services is challenging. Additionally, most service providers are secular and embrace secular standards.
Covenant Support Services offers a Christian alternative—services grounded on biblically based Christian values and standards.
